Description

The Iliotibial (IT) band becomes inflamed in runners or other athletes that engage in repetitive activities with the lower extremities. The IT band itself may become inflamed or the greater trochanteric bursa may be inflamed. These two conditions are very similar in appearance and management. IT band syndromes include lateral thigh and hip pain, radiating pain into the lower leg, limited range of motion and weakness of the hip.

The management of IT band syndrome varies due to the severity of symptoms. Conservative measures include: stretching of the IT band and piriformis, correcting foot postural faults with orthotics, replacing worn out running shoes, changing running routes on a daily or weakly basis. Stretching the IT band on a daily basis is very important. NSAID's and physical therapy may be required in extreme cases.
